Iverson Unhappy

When Allen Iverson became a free agent after a disappointing 2008/2009 season with Detroit, one had to wonder if a team would be willing to take the risk of signing The Answer and everything he brings with him. It is not a risk because of his advanced age and the lost step. There is no doubt that even if he lost another 3 steps, AI would still be one of the better scorers in the league. The risk is Iverson’s reputation and history as a difficult personality. He could not get along with Larry Brown, which was well reported and is still talked about today, ten years later. When the Sixers management brought in Maurice Cheeks, whom Iverson had been lobbying for for years, even then AI found a way to create drama and eventually got his coach fired. The drama continued in Denver. Same story after the trade to Detroit during last season. So you really expected it to be different in Memphis??

Barely a week into the season, Allen Iverson is making headlines again. Not with his play, but with his complaints, of course. After missing the entire preseason and not being able to practice with the team, Iverson started the season coming off the bench. Makes sense, right? You don’t practice, you don’t start. It seems pretty logical. Well, not so much to Allen Iverson. After losing to the Kings on Monday, AI complained about coming off the bench and stated that he was “no 6th man”. We all know his attitude towards practice, and it appearsto be the same today still as Iverson believes he should start despite not practicing for weeks. Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins was not fazed by Iverson’s comments, and continues bringing number 3 off the bench. It will be interesting to watch how this story develops. I for one don’t see Iverson finishing the season in a Grizzlies uniform.
